With firework season starting, there are likely to be flashed and bangs echoing through the coming nights! We thought it would be a good time to have a look at how to keep your pets calm during this time, and not have to worry about your property being damaged at the same time! Here’s our hand list of a few steps you can take:
- Stay indoors:
This one is quite obvious, but don’t take your dogs on walks in the evenings when the fireworks will be getting set off.
- Draw your curtains:
Bright flashes can scare dogs just as much as a loud bang can, so keeping your curtains closed will stop them from being as scared and causing chaos around the house!
- Give your pet space:
Especially with dogs, confining them in one room can make them a lot more anxious, let them roam free around the house.
- Distract them with treats:
Bones and chews are a great way to keep your pet occupied and feeling calm.
- Stay calm:
Instead of overly comforting an anxious cat, keep cool – your cat will feel more relaxed if you are.
- Create a safe space:
For your cat, a cardboard box filled up with blankets and treats creates a great environment for them to feel safe and calm.
- Play music:
Especially with cats, loud noises don’t mix well. You can play some smoothing music or have the TV on to keep them calm and drown out some of the firework noise.
- Don’t get annoyed:
This one might sound silly to have on, however sometimes it’s easier said than done! However, when it comes to fireworks your pets can’t help how they act as they are just scared and need some comforting, so if they continue to bark, cry, hiss, or whatever it is they may do, be patient with your pets. Because at the end of the day as long as they don’t wreck the house and don’t get too scared, that’s all that matters!
